Should have come to mind to check the AWS as I studied metallurgy in college. I found the jewelry industry more fun so that's where I am now 30 years later. I'm working on a modification for my hobby car.
I'd like to upgrade the front spindles steering knuckles and there is nothing available aftermarket. There is, however, one from another car that is pretty close for geometry. It's an aluminum forging and would need an upper ball joint boss in an area where there is nothing now.
The added part would be approximately 2" x 3" x 1" thick. First, if properly done, is this advisable? Pre-heat I assume. Post heat treat? Is the alloy of the base part critical? If so how do I identify it? Came out nice. Originally posted by aametalmaster View Post. Last edited by Grumple ; , PM. Originally posted by Desertrider33 View Post. I would think either forged or cast would be about the same. What process are you going to use to weld it?
Bob Ops see a tig in your sig line It is possible. Originally posted by Grumple View Post. MM P Originally posted by davedarragh View Post. Castings are where liquid metal or aluminum is poured into a mold and "cast" by gravity or light pressure.
Forgings are done with a billet of material, and "forged" under extreme pressure as aluminum wheels and provide a much higher quality, with less porosity, and generally less weight. Aircraft skins are also another alloy not weldable that's why they're riveted. Hope this helps Dave. Originally posted by FusionKing View Post.
OK it is broken I am guessing? If you can't weld it how else will they fix it? If the forging is a weldable alloy it will weld wonderful because it will be much like an extrusion without all the porosity like a casting has.
I think I have welded everything on a motorcycle or ATV.
