Why is thunderbird 17 so slow

Anyone else seen this or have any ideas? Hawkeye22 Distinguished Moderator. Feb 10, 0 19, I hadn't noticed this at all. Do you have large imap folders? It may be taking longer to try and sync folders before shutting down.

If you have t-bird set to purge deleted emails on close, this may cause it too. Also, if you use the built in "sync", it may be pushing your booksmarks and stuff to the cloud on close. I never noticed it up through version 15 and haven't changed anything else other than the update. Interesting that it affects all my machines equally with that email account set. I have indexing off and all of my mail through CableOne is on the Google mail servers so the small delay at startup to download and sync the mail happens then.

It isn't a big deal, just seems odd that it started with the 17 update. Dec 31, 1 0 18, 0. You must log in or register to reply here. Like Thunderbird? Try running Thunderbird in safe mode not to be confused with Windows safe mode to temporarily disable any added extensions and themes. If not, see Testing memory usage problems. Tools such as Process Explorer provide more detailed information than Task Manager, and can be useful when trying to figure out exactly what is going on.

How many accounts you have, the number of messages in the current folder, whether Thunderbird is configured to open new messages in an existing window, and are you using POP or IMAP accounts has some effect, but typically shouldn't cause a major problem. However, reducing the number of messages you keep in your inbox folder should improve the startup speed, help reduce the chance for corruption if you regularly compact your folders and decrease your memory usage.

No settings were changed in Thunderbird recently. Mouse-over : hard to determine as many of my mails don't have a mouse-over at all. For those that do the first one has some delay.

None of my folders do show a mouse-over. Idle cpu usage : barely noticeable , but htop does show it. Disliking systemd intensely, but not satisfied with alternatives so focusing on taming systemd. Did you use the guided installer? If yes, I can't help you. And not just Thunderbird but also in Firefox I'm experiencing a very noticeable slow-down and increase in long CPU spikes.

I hadn't updated in a while, so it was a large upgrade for me and it is not so clear to me what changed where. To clarify, the mouse-over effect does not show any details of the particular e-mail or folder. It is just a highlighting by changing the background color, nothing more. I did not test that with the old version.
